The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a public service program in India aimed at developing student youth through community service. It was launched in 1969 as a part of the social service initiatives under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The main objectives of the NSS are to instill a sense of social responsibility, foster national integration, and provide opportunities for students to work for community welfare.
Under NSS, students from colleges and universities volunteer for various social service activities such as cleanliness drives, literacy campaigns, health awareness programs, environmental conservation projects, and rural development initiatives. NSS volunteers often work in collaboration with local communities and NGOs to address societal needs and contribute to nation-building efforts.
Participation in NSS is voluntary, but it’s highly encouraged among students as it not only allows them to contribute to society but also helps in their personal development by enhancing leadership skills, empathy, and a sense of civic duty.

The motto of the National Service Scheme (NSS) is “Not Me But You.” This motto emphasizes the importance of selfless service and the spirit of volunteerism. It reflects the ideology that one should prioritize the welfare and needs of others over personal interests, promoting a sense of social responsibility and community engagement among NSS volunteers.
National Service Scheme was started by the government with the aim of developing social skills in the students. It is obligatory to join any one of the activities viz. NSS or Physical Training for first year and second year students. Term will be granted only on the successful completion of the prescribed work. 120 hours of work in NSS and 75% attendance in physical training is must. Attending the NSS camp is compulsory.
