The pioneering efforts of the trustees, their foresight and creative instinct led to the foundation of J. Z. Shah Arts and H .P. Desai Commerce College, Amroli on 1st July, 1991. Institute got permanent affiliation on 1st July, 1998 and has been recognized under section 2(f ) and 12(B) of the UGC ACT:23/6/2000. J. Z. Shah Arts and H .P. Desai Commerce College plays a very pivotal role in the second fastest developing city of India – Surat, which has almost 35% of population who has migrated from different parts of India. Our College is located in such an area which is bearing such migrated population who are economically lower middle class rural area people. Most of them have migrated for industrial opportunities that the diamond city Surat provides them. The students who take admission in our College are youth of these migrated population having rural background and lower middle class standards irrespective of their cast, creed, region, languages, economical background or religious beliefs, our College provides them opportunities for higher education. Students have exposed to urban standards, they are made techno-savvy particularly girls are given ample opportunities to realize their inner strength, capabilities and above all self-respect for themselves.
Since its establishment in 1991, the college has made remarkable strides in both academic offerings and infrastructural developments. Initially College offered B.A. and B. Com. Courses in Gujarati medium. In 1997, the college introduced English-medium instruction, followed by the granting of permanent affiliation in 1998 and recognition under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act in 2000. The launch of a Post-Graduation Centre in Commerce (Gujarati Medium) in 2001 marked the institution’s initial expansion into advanced studies.
Significant advancements began in 2008-09, with NAAC accreditation at a “B” Grade and a CGPA of 2.27, alongside the introduction of post-graduate programs in Arts and Commerce (English Medium), additional classes for women, and classroom modernization through LCD projectors. During 2009-10, the college added five new postgraduate courses and expanded afternoon B.Com. classes for women. In 2010-11, it established a Digital English Language Laboratory and subscribed to INFLIBNET, while 2011-12 saw the implementation of a semester system for B.Com. and B.A. programs, Wi-Fi classrooms, ERP software for administration, and an official Facebook presence.
Continuing its drive for technological integration, in 2012-13, the college launched SCOPE-DELL training for students, an online portal, and DELNET subscriptions. The following year, the Commerce Lab and an air-conditioned library were inaugurated, with NAAC reaffirming the college’s “B” Grade with an improved CGPA of 2.74. The college also hosted “INNOVISION-2014,” a festival by the Students’ Council. In 2014-15, the college released mobile apps, “Amroli College” and “I Notice Board.”
The 2015-16 academic year was marked by AAA-Gujarat accreditation at “B” Grade (CGPA 2.88), the launch of SEALS personality development lectures, IDEES research journal, and the celebration of the institution’s Silver Jubilee. In 2016-17, the college introduced an online admission system, rainwater harvesting, and additional certificate courses, alongside a new activity room and digital lab. It was also ranked in the 151-200 band by NIRF. In 2017-18, a jewellery design course began, and certifications in ISO standards were achieved. Solar power systems and sanitary vending/disposal machines were also installed.
In 2019-20, the college attained a “B++” Grade in its 3rd NAAC Cycle with a CGPA of 2.94, initiated vocational courses, hosted an ICSSR-sponsored conference, and received a 3-Star GSIRF rating. The following years saw approval for UGC Skill-Based Courses, renovations of the computer lab, and multiple MoUs to foster collaboration and learning opportunities.
In 2022-23, the college launched new certificate programs, received the “Best Study Centre Award” from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, and inaugurated a Research Centre. The most recent achievements of 2023-24 include certificate courses in practical fields such as Clinical Psychology and Temple Management, a “Best NSS College” award, and recognition for blood donation efforts by Surat Raktdan Kendra. Through a consistent expansion of its academic and technological infrastructure, the college has continuously elevated its standards, achieving numerous accolades and catering to the diverse educational needs of its students.
Additionally, the college has completed Gender, Green, and Energy audits, reflecting its dedication to inclusivity, environmental sustainability, and efficient resource management.
These accomplishments, coupled with continuous innovation and societal contributions, highlight the college’s unwavering commitment to excellence and holistic development.
